Bulgarian Society for Individual Liberty (BSIL)

The first libertarians in Bulgaria are joined together in the Bulgarian Society for Individual Liberty, established September 2003 in Sofia. The Society’s primary objective is to contribute for the better understanding and broader acceptance of the values of Liberty: inviolability of every individual’s personal dignity, property, and life, individual responsibility, equality before the law, unrestricted economic initiative and competition.

In our organization there are economists, businessmen, translators, sociologists, journalists, a lawyer, etc. Liberty is among the few things that can join together people that are so different. Liberty – meaning opportunity for every individual to be the master of his own life and property. This is what joined us together, this Liberty – the Liberty of the individual’s growth and pursuit of happiness. We believe that individual’s prosperity is the ultimate goal of every sensible being. We are led by our hope that, promoting the ideas of individual liberty, we will be able to exercise influence on the formation and functioning of the institutions in society. We wish to change the nation we live in, by restricting the state that rules over it.

We believe that the best way for Bulgaria is to take the Road to Liberty. This is why we started by publishing in Bulgarian Ken Schooland’s world’s best-seller, The Adventures of Jonathan Gullible. The Epilogue of this book presents the philosophy of Liberty, and our determination is to make it widely known.

We are also doing that through the short essays in the weekly column, “I, the Citizen,” in one of only few serious daily newspapers in Bulgaria, Dnevnik. – from October 2003 to present day.

A monthly Internet Flat Tax newsletter – www.libertarium.net started in August 2004.

The second book project of BSIL was Bulgarian issue of The Libertarianism: A Primer by David Boaz. The book came off the press in July 2004.

We are also putting together a program for publishing to popularize in Bulgaria thinkers like Ayn Rand, Friedrich Hayek, Milton Friedman. Hayek’s The Road to Serfdom is scheduled to be published till the end of 2004.

2005 is The Year of Ayn Rand for libertarian community. Therefore we are intending to publish two Ayn Rand’s books – “The Fountainhead” and “Capitalism: The Unknown Ideal” – as a part of the ambitious educational mission of the Bulgarian Society for Individual Liberty to disseminate the libertarianism in Bulgaria.
